Mobile GIS

Just came across a project to develop an open source mapping application for PDA's. MapTools has the following objective.

Mobile GIS is an Open Source project aimed at providing various GIS solutions for a variety of mobile devices. Currently Mobile GIS is in the initial planning phase.

Web Based Solution

We have been experimenting with a Web Based solution for Smartphones and PDAs (with an Internet connection). The solution uses UMN MapServer and PHP to produce a HTML page designed for the small screen size, but has the same functionality as a full size Web interface. To have the look at what we have done to date, simply click here

Nice! I of course was only

Nice! I of course was only testing it in my web browser rather than on a small screen device. As a geocacher it would be useful to have the ability to enter a WGS-84 lat/long rather than just entering addresses :)

Data Capture

Because the backend is running UMN MapServer, it wouldn't be difficult to build a form that allowed users to enter data with co-ordinates and store them on the server either in a public or private area. I am considering building an interface that would allow you to add objects using either NZMG, NZTM, or WGS84 co-ordinates within the secure areas of the server. At this stage the idea was more for storing field data during an emergency event.
