Sorted by decreasing number of members

  • GIS User is a free list for ESRI users in New Zealand. It is run by the New Zealand ESRI Users Group and hosted by Eagle Technology. It is one of the largest lists, but topics should generally be limited to ESRI GIS only. (assumed in the hundred by the number of Out Of Office replies :P)
  • nzopengis is a list hosted on Google Groups to discuss open source/data GIS. This list is also the focal point of the New Zealand OpenStreetMap community. (48 members @ 2008-07-10)
  • NZ-GIS is the new list provided by gis.org.nz, also on Google Groups. This list is designed to be a catchall for discussion about GIS in New Zealand, and welcomes commercial and open source involvement. Its aim is to provide a vendor and platform neutral discussion list. (17 members @ 2008-07-10)

Social Networking

  • LinkedIn.com NZ GIS Group - an open group on LinkedIn for all GIS professionals in NZ, and Kiwi's overseas. Co-ordinated by gis.org.nz. (25 members @ 2008-08-01)
  • Network informally in your local area at your GIS (Gossiping, Imbibing & Socialising) Drinks. Ideally these are centred on the town where your Regional Council is situated as they are often the natural focus of regional/local government who have a good solid base of GIS users. Ask your local contact to be put on the email list
